ROP VAN MIERLO
At first I didn’t like this book, but the more I spent time with it the more I realised that in order to capture spontaneity in such a way you have to make hundreds of illustrations in order to seize the perfect moment. This is not a book about cuteness its about patience.
The quote on the back: ‘I tried yoga but I find stress less boring’. I love this quote it pretty much sums up what I enjoy. Hoogerbrugge, a Rotterdam artist, knows how to make us aware of our daily habits.
FUKT MAGAZINE FOR DRAWING
EDITOR – BJORN HEGARDT
I found this publication in a small Rotterdam book fair. If you can get a hold of the whole series or subscribe to the coming issues I truly recommend it. The editors have a great eye for selecting work.
TRAFFIC IN TOWN
MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT
This book is from the time when maps were printed in 4 to 7 special colours. Even though the book dates from 1963 the colours still remain fluorescent, with page after page of traffic diagrams, if the same book existed now they would have at least 3 volumes with all the traffic we have now.
MIFFY / NINTJE
The Netherlands boasts the largest book market in Europe that takes place in Deventer the first week of August. Apparently if you put all the stalls on one stretch, you will have 6 kilometers of books. I was so overwhelmed with the amount that I think I had an overdose, there was so much, that I didn’t know where to begin. I searched for 6 hours but became more and more indecisive, there was just too much choice, I had to drag myself away without a prize but just as I was leaving I found this book. I was at peace I could go home now.
ART OF MCSWEENEY’S
THE EDITORS OF MCSWEENEY’S
The last couple of years I have managed to collect quite a few McSweeney books, not because I actively search for them but my friend Babette does. I initially buy the book for her either as a birthday present or Christmas present only to found out that she already has a copy so I end up keeping it. This has happened far too many times and I am sure she thinks I do this on purpose so that I can increase my collection.
Another book I found in the Netherlands regarding Alpine plants. I assume the Dutch must miss the mountains, its the only excuse I can find for all these Alp related books.
VON L. & PROF. C. SCHROSTER
Although I collect flora books, its always the last section I visit in a book shop. I remember being quite disappointed with not find anything until I found this. Although I have seen a few variations of this book, this by far has the most beautiful cover, the combination of a dead brown with the artificial reds and blues is what makes it so particular.
HOE MEN HET ABC BEGEERDE EN LEERDE
When you find a book with type and peculiar illustrations, its just unavoidable that as a designer you will just have to have it.
Being jealous is not a good trait, but seriously the work of Keiichi Tanaami brings out the worst in me. I hope you fall in love with his work too.
